1. Estimate frequent apps first
Maps and messaging are usually modest; short-form video, HD streaming and cloud backup consume data much faster. Start with the data estimator.
2. Leave room for the unexpected
System updates, photo syncing and occasional tethering add usage. A buffer of about 20% is a useful starting point.
3. Use data-saving settings
Disable video autoplay and mobile photo backup. Download offline maps, music and language packs before departure.
4. Choose a flexible plan
For a short trip, a plan that allows top-ups can be better than buying far too much. Check throttling, hotspot support and coverage.
