How Vietnam's holidays work
- Article 112 of the 2019 Labour Code gives 11 paid holidays: New Year's Day (1 January), five days for Tết, Hùng Kings' Commemoration Day (the 10th day of the third lunar month), Reunification Day (30 April), International Labour Day (1 May) and two days for National Day (2 September and a day next to it). From 2026, National Assembly Resolution 28/2026/QH16 adds Vietnamese Culture Day on 24 November, making 12.
- A holiday that falls on a weekly rest day is given on the next working day. In 2026, Hùng Kings' day falls on Sunday 26 April, so Monday 27 April is off.
- Each year the Prime Minister or a Deputy Prime Minister approves how the holidays fall for civil servants, and the Ministry of Home Affairs announces it. To make a longer break, a weekday can be swapped for a Saturday: in 2026, Friday 2 January was swapped for Saturday 10 January, and Monday 31 August for Saturday 22 August.
- These decisions arrive one occasion at a time, anywhere from a year to a week ahead. In April 2026 the ministry confirmed there would be no swap around Hùng Kings' day and 30 April – 1 May.

2027: not complete yet
We add a year once every holiday in it is settled. Until then the calculator shows its dates as not published rather than guessing.
What these dates don't cover
- Private employers. They choose some days themselves — which five days around Tết, and 1 or 3 September — and are encouraged, not required, to follow the government's swaps. They also set their own working week, which may include Saturdays.
- Foreign employees, who also get one day off for their own country's traditional New Year and one for its national day.
- Schools and round-the-clock services, which publish their own schedules.
Questions
- Does Vietnam have makeup workdays like mainland China?
- Sometimes, and far fewer. In 2026 government offices worked two Saturdays, 10 January and 22 August, each in exchange for a weekday off. A swap needs the Prime Minister's approval, and many holidays have none.
- How long is the Tết holiday in 2027?
- For government offices, seven days: Thursday 4 February to Wednesday 10 February 2027. Lunar New Year's Day is Saturday 6 February.
- Is 24 November a public holiday?
- Yes, from 2026. It is Vietnamese Culture Day, a paid day off. In 2026 it falls on a Tuesday and is taken on the day, without a swap.
- Do private companies follow these dates?
- Not exactly. The swaps and the exact days around Tết and National Day bind government offices; private employers follow the Labour Code and choose within it, often in line with the government's schedule.
