Can maps navigate without a network?
Yes, if you downloaded the area before you left. GPS does not use mobile data. Live traffic, transit arrivals and most place search still need a connection.
How do Google Maps and Apple Maps differ offline?
Both locate and navigate inside a downloaded region. Google usually downloads a selected area; Apple downloads an offline region in Maps. Neither gives full live traffic or online business details without a network.
How large an area should I download?
At least airport-to-city, walking range around the hotel and that day’s itinerary. Too small and you reconnect at the edge; too large uses storage. On Wi-Fi, add the neighbouring area.
Can I download after I land?
You can, but it uses roaming or eSIM data and airport signal is unreliable. Finish the download and an update on home Wi-Fi before you fly.
01When you need offline maps#
Metros, mountains, cross-border trains and cities where roaming is expensive are where you get stuck on “Loading.” An offline pack still shows where you are and how to reach a saved pin. Hotel Wi-Fi does not follow you onto a bus.
A healthy data plan is not a reason to skip the download. Live maps can burn a couple of hundred MB in a day. Download the area, and keep live traffic for when you actually have a signal.
02How three apps download, and what still works#
Google Maps, Apple Maps and OpenStreetMap apps such as Organic Maps all navigate offline; menus and limits differ. The table is a pre-departure comparison. Versions change — use each app’s current help page.
Download on Wi-Fi and cover the airport-to-city run, the hotel area and that day’s sights. Too small a region and you fall back to live tiles at the edge.

03A map is not enough#
Offline maps answer where you are and how to walk there. Hotel confirmations, the address in the local script, emergency numbers, an offline phrase pack and a timetable need a second copy: screenshot, PDF or a note on the phone — not only an inbox you cannot open.
Phone numbers, opening hours and “nearby well-rated” need a network. Save the day’s must-visit pins while you still have Wi-Fi, then follow only those pins once you are offline.
04After you land#
GPS does not use data, but the first fix indoors or just off the aircraft can take a few minutes. Step to a window or outside before opening the map. Once navigation has started, avoid dropping back into live search so the app does not fetch tiles again.
Live traffic, live buses and “search nearby” are gone offline. Add 10–15 minutes on foot and do not depend on a last-minute reroute at night. Battery dies before data does when the screen stays on; pack a power bank.
05Battery, storage and updates#
A bright navigation screen kills the battery faster than it burns data. Confirm the power bank can fly, and dim the display until the map is still readable. Offline packs can be hundreds of MB to several GB; delete unused video first so the download does not fail halfway.
Roads change. Update the downloaded area on Wi-Fi once more before you leave. On a long trip, refresh when you have a network every few days rather than following a demolished junction. After a phone swap, download again — account sync is not the same as the files sitting on the new device.
06Walking, transit and driving are three downloads#
A walking map of an old town is a small rectangle. A driving map to the airport is a corridor plus the ring road, because a closure sends you onto a road you never downloaded. Transit is the trap: most offline packs show the lines but not whether the next train is cancelled. If you will ride metro or buses, screenshot the last timetable or download the operator’s PDF on Wi-Fi; do not expect the map app to replace live arrivals. Cycling apps based on OSM can work well offline and still miss a path that opened last month if you never refreshed.
Download the mode you will actually use, then one size larger. Walkers add the neighbouring district so a wrong turn does not hit live tiles. Drivers add the ring road and the airport spur, not only downtown. If you switch from train to taxi at an outer station, that station must be inside the pack. Sharing a live location with a friend still needs data; agree a pin and a clock time while you have Wi-Fi (“north exit, 18:00”) so you can meet without a chat app. This site’s data estimator can price a day of live maps; it cannot download the pack for you. If two people share one downloaded pack on one phone, the second phone still needs its own download; a screenshot of the map is not navigation.
07Common mistakes#
Downloading on departure day, missing the airport, never updating, treating offline as “every feature,” and pulling the map on roaming after landing. Update once more on home Wi-Fi so you are not following a demolished junction.
Another is downtown-only coverage while the hotel sits in a suburb, or a new phone that never received the pack. A Google account sync does not guarantee the offline files are on the new device. Open the app and check the downloaded list before you fly.
08Checklist before departure#
Update the app on Wi-Fi; download an area that covers airport, hotel and the day’s plan; star the hotel and emergency pins; download an offline phrase pack; check storage; open the app once more to confirm the download finished.
