HOTSPOT SHARING

Travel eSIM hotspots: why speeds slow down or connections fail

Sharing mobile data with laptops or travel companions requires checking hotspot support, FUP throttling, and background sync.

Check hotspot permission before buying#

Not all travel eSIM plans allow personal hotspot tethering. Some budget or unlimited packages block tethering or limit connected devices.

Always verify 'Hotspot / Tethering Supported' in the plan terms before purchasing.

Understand Fair Usage Policy (FUP)#

Plans marketed as 'unlimited' often apply a Fair Usage Policy (FUP). Crossing a daily limit (e.g., 1–3 GB) throttles speed down to 128 kbps or 512 kbps.

Hotspot sharing consumes data faster across multiple devices, triggering FUP throttling sooner.

Manual APN configuration#

If mobile data works on your phone but connected devices cannot reach the internet, the Personal Hotspot APN may be blank.

Enter the exact APN name (e.g., internet or globaldata) into the Personal Hotspot APN field in cellular settings.

Two practical examples#

Example 1: Two travellers sharing one hotspot. If one device syncs photos or streams 1080p video in the background, a 2 GB daily allowance can be exhausted in an hour.

Example 2: Connecting a laptop to a phone hotspot. Laptops automatically download OS updates or cloud sync when connected to Wi-Fi unless set to 'Metered Connection'.

Common errors and data saving#

The most common mistake is forgetting to enable 'Low Data Mode', which pauses background app refresh and automatic backups on connected devices.

Another error is leaving the hotspot on continuously, which drains battery and allows background syncing.

Recommended strategy#

For groups, fixed total-GB packages or individual eSIMs for each traveller provide better speed, stability, and control than a single shared daily-limited plan.
